I grew up during the explosion in popularity of triathlons. I watched the Hawaiian Ironman race on TV every year. The proliferation of aero equipment like clip-on bars, along with tri specific wear was becoming mainstream among many aspiring athletes.
With my background as both a swimmer and cyclist, it was my teen dream to participate in triathlons. I never did because I didn't want to commit to learning to run.
As I've gotten older, my dream never waned. I still had the desire to do a tri. One evening in 2019 I would find something that started the path to fulfilling the dream. It was the moment I discovered the existence of a subset race of triathlons called "aquabike".
As the name suggests, an aquabike race consists of a swim leg and a cycling leg. Since I was still reasonably able to do both, it was exactly what I needed to get motivated.
I started the research to gain the knowledge I would need to get started with training. I bought books, watched videos, and read web pages, looking for any kind of insight. I developed a training plan and started following it. It didn't last long, as 2020 rolled around and changed everything. Pools were closed and the race I wanted to do would be cancelled.
In the following years, my life has been quite a roller coaster and I've never returned to that initial fervor. During that time I've had some health struggles, lost a lot of weight, and recently completed the build up of the bike I will use to do my first race.
I started riding the bike, getting to experience what my first tri-bike was like, it inspired me to figure out how I can get back on track to doing that first aquabike race.
Right now I've got my eyes set on two sprint distance aquabike races in Colorado. One is in July, the other in September. I am leaning to the September one, as it gives me more time to train in the summer and it is a closer drive.
I've also been researching about running. I've found a few books helpful, along with a few YouTube channels that are guiding me to taking the first stride.
Right now though, I'm going to really concentrate on the aquabike. I need to focus on my training and acquire the gear I will need to complete that first race. I hope that you will follow along with on my socials!
